Breakthrough to Środmieście
Due to the exhaustion of the possibilities of defending the Old Town, on August 30, 1944, the commander of the “North” Group, Colonel Karol Ziemski “Wachnowski” gave the insurgent forces an order to evacuate to Srodmiescie and Zoliborz. Part of this plan was the assault of the best-trained and armed insurgent units through German positions to Srodmiescie. The action, in which the commander of “Broda,” Major/Lt. Col. Jan Kajus Andrzejewski “Jan,” among others, was killed, failed due to poor coordination of the insurgents and massive enemy fire, which practically blocked the advance through Bielańska Street. After dramatic experiences, only a part (about 60 soldiers) of the “Zośka” Battalion under the command of Lt./Cpt. Ryszard Białous “Jerzy” achieved the planned goal.
